The American Diabetes Association estimates 20.8 million Americans have diabetes; however, 6.2 million of those people are not aware they have it.
Diabetes occurs when the level of glucose in the body is too high.
Type 1 diabetes occurs when insulin, which regulates glucose, is not produced. Type 1 makes up 5-10 percent of diagnoses.
Type 2 diabetes occurs when the existing insulin is unable to control glucose levels. Type 2 accounts for the majority of diagnoses and can usually be controlled through diet and exercise.
If you have diabetes or are at risk, here's what you can do to stay healthy:
1. Monitor and manage your ABCs-A1C or blood glucose average, blood pressure and cholesterol.
2. Lead a healthy lifestyle, which includes regular exercise, following the food plan your doctor sets up for you, and maintaining a healthy weight and cholesterol level.
3.Visit health care professionals at least twice a year to monitor your glucose and cholesterol levels, check for diseases that commonly come with diabetes and get other important tests.
