Senior Fitness: Exercise Equipment

Exercise Equipment for Seniors
We all know the importance of exercising and fitness for senior citizens. But there are so many gadgets and different types of equipment out there: Which ones are appropriate for older citizens?

Exercise equipment for seniors can be found almost anywhere, including your local department store or sporting goods store. Many times, exercise equipment used for other age groups might be appropriate for elderly citizens as well. To see which equipment you need, consider the types of exercises you will do.

The most important exercise equipment for older folks is a comfortable pair of walking shoes. The right sneaker will support your feet and your back, and will minimize injuries and discomfort. For walking and aerobics, you might also need a pair of light hand weights. There are weights as light as 1 pound, and even those that are less than that. Wrist weights are also available in light weights, which is great for increasing the intensity of any exercise program.

When it comes to strength training, exercise equipment for the elderly will vary. Generally, traditional exercise equipment which utilizes weights can be rough on the joint and may inflame muscles and cause injuries. When considering exercise machines, try to find ones that utilize air or hydraulics, which is gentler on the joints. Hydraulics and air machines are widely becoming available in many gyms and fitness center, so it may not be necessary to purchase them. This will benefit those with arthritis or other joint conditions.

Other exercise equipment for the older generation includes items that are used for yoga, floor exercises, and balance exercises. For yoga and floor exercises, you will most likely need a floor mat. There are special floor mats that are thicker, which will help if you have back problems or can’t sit or lie down on hard surfaces. There are also balance balls which come in different sizes and are specific to height. These exercise equipment for seniors is generally inexpensive.

For specialized fitness programs like water aerobics, you can find equipment to cater to them. For water exercises, pool noodles and foam weights are used to strengthen muscles. Step aerobics classes and programs require an aerobic step. These can be found in lower heights, which is very beneficial to seniors.

Step aerobics machines, elliptical machines, and treadmills are also great for seniors. Try ones that are easier on the joints and offer slower speeds.

Before purchasing any exercise equipment, older citizens should try them out and test them in the store, if one is available for demonstration. If not, you should research and read reviews to make the right decision. Because senior citizens have special needs, the machines and equipment purchased should be carefully examined. A sales associate at your local sporting goods store can help.
