As potent sources of cholesterol-busting phytosterols, nuts and seeds are some of the heart-healthiest snacks around. But which ones pack the biggest punch?
Sunflower kernels and pistachios rated highest in a study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. Because these morsels are also loaded with calories--anywhere from 160 to 200 per ounce--one handful is recommended for the weight-conscious; others can double up, says Katherine Tallmadge, R.D., an American Dietetic Association spokeswoman.
While not your typical snack food, wheat germ topped the study's phytosterol count; Tallmadge advises tossing it on your cereal, yogurt, or salad.
